Skip tracing is the American term for finding a person who has moved without leaving a forwarding address. In the UK the same work is called tracing, address tracing or gone-away tracing, and it is done by tracing agents and private investigators for clients who have a lawful reason to need the address. The name comes from "skipping town". This guide explains how the British version differs from the American one, why US skip-trace websites do not find UK addresses, who uses the service here, what it costs and what you receive.

## What skip tracing means, and what the UK calls it

A skip tracer finds people who have gone: the tenant who left owing rent, the customer who stopped paying, the defendant who cannot be served. The person is "the skip". The phrase is everyday language in the United States and Canada, but the British trade has always said "tracing", and calls a person who has left an address a "gone-away". The work is done by a [tracing agent](https://tracebureau.co.uk/guides/what-is-a-tracing-agent), an [enquiry agent](https://tracebureau.co.uk/guides/what-is-an-enquiry-agent) or a private investigator. If you searched for "skip tracing UK", address tracing is the service you are looking for.

| Point | United States | United Kingdom |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Name | Skip tracing, skip trace | Tracing, address tracing, gone-away tracing |

| Records | Many public records open to anyone and widely resold | Few open records, and personal data protected by law |
| Usual product | Instant lookups and bulk lists | A checked report on one named person |
| Usual payment | Per search or by subscription, right or wrong | A fixed fee per trace, often no find, no fee |

## Why American skip-trace websites do not find UK addresses

American skip tracing runs on raw material the UK does not have. In much of the United States, voter files, property transactions and court filings are public record, and data brokers have gathered and resold them for decades. A website can return a plausible current address for most American adults in seconds because the underlying records are open.

Britain has no equivalent. There is no public lookup that returns where a named person lives. The version of the electoral register that anyone can buy is opt-out and incomplete, and property ownership records are searched by address, not by the owner's name. So when a US skip-trace site or data broker offers "UK coverage", what sits behind it is usually a thin layer of old listings, and a result labelled "current" is often the address the person left years ago. Our guide to [why free people-search sites fail in the UK](https://tracebureau.co.uk/guides/why-free-people-search-fails-uk) explains this in detail.

## Why the UK rules are different

A person's address is personal data, and the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply to anyone who looks for it professionally. Every search needs a lawful basis. For money owed, legal proceedings, probate, a former tenancy or a commercial dispute, that basis is the client's legitimate interest. A reputable service asks why you need the address, records the answer against the instruction, and refuses if there is no lawful reason. Curiosity, an ex-partner and someone who has simply cut contact are all refused. The one personal route is consent: a message is passed on and the person decides whether to reply.

There is no licence for tracing in the UK, so the marks of a proper service are registration with the Information Commissioner's Office and that recorded reason. Obtaining someone's details by deception is a criminal offence here. More on [whether address tracing is legal](https://tracebureau.co.uk/is-address-tracing-legal).

## Who uses skip tracing in the UK

- **Landlords and letting agents** whose tenant left owing rent or damage. See the [landlord's guide to tracing a former tenant](https://tracebureau.co.uk/guides/landlord-guide-tracing-former-tenant).
- **Creditors**, from a sole trader with an unpaid invoice to a credit control team, who need an address before a letter before claim or a court claim. See [trace a debtor](https://tracebureau.co.uk/use-cases/trace-a-debtor).
- **Solicitors and litigants in person** who must serve documents or enforce a judgment. See [tracing for solicitors](https://tracebureau.co.uk/for-solicitors).
- **Executors and administrators** looking for a beneficiary. See [find a beneficiary](https://tracebureau.co.uk/use-cases/find-a-beneficiary).
- **Clients overseas**, often American or Canadian, who need someone found in Britain and reach for the term they know.

Trace Bureau supplies the address. It does not contact the person, collect money or enforce judgments.

## What skip tracing costs in the UK, and how payment models differ

British tracing is priced per person, not per search. Consumer services have typically advertised from tens of pounds up to around a hundred, firms have routinely paid £150 to £350 and more through traditional agents, and private investigators often charge by the hour. Trace Bureau charges fixed prices whoever instructs: Standard is £100 within 3 to 5 working days, Express is £150 within 48 hours and Priority is £195 within 24 hours. Firms instructing ten or more a month pay £85 per trace on a monthly invoice. Everything is on the [pricing page](https://tracebureau.co.uk/pricing).

When you pay matters as much as how much. Many "no find, no fee" services take the money first and refund on failure. Others keep a search fee whatever happens. With Trace Bureau there is nothing to pay when you instruct. Your card is only held, and it is charged only when a result verified by a private investigator is delivered rated Confirmed or Probable. A Possible result is offered at half price and you choose whether to take it. Not found, no fee. Our guide to [what a tracing agent costs](https://tracebureau.co.uk/guides/tracing-agent-cost-uk) compares the models.

## What you receive

An American skip-trace report is often a page of possible addresses, phone numbers and relatives for you to work through. A UK trace is narrower and more definite. Trace Bureau cross-references more than 150 sources, registers and records, and a person checks the result. You receive a dated PDF report with the person's current registered UK address and a confidence rating: Confirmed, Probable or Possible. The date and the rating are what let you act on it, whether that means posting a letter, issuing a claim or instructing a process server.

No honest service guarantees a find. If the person cannot be placed at a current UK address, you are told so plainly and nothing is charged.

## How to instruct from outside the UK

You can be anywhere in the world. The person you are looking for must be in the UK: England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. You instruct online, any card works, the fee is charged in pounds and only on a result, and the report arrives by email. The same lawful-reason rule applies to every client, wherever they are. If the evidence shows the person has left the UK, you are told and not charged. Our guide to [finding someone's UK address from abroad](https://tracebureau.co.uk/guides/find-someones-uk-address-from-abroad) covers the detail.

## When to instruct a professional trace

Instruct when you have a lawful reason to know where someone is now and you are about to spend money or take a legal step that depends on the address. The minimum to start is the person's full legal name plus a date of birth or a previous address. [Instruct a trace](https://tracebureau.co.uk/instruct) online in about five minutes. There is nothing to pay when you instruct, and no fee if the person is not found.

## Questions

### What is skip tracing called in the UK?

Tracing, address tracing or gone-away tracing. Skip tracing is the American term for the same work: finding the current address of someone who has moved without leaving one. In the UK it is done by tracing agents and private investigators.

### Is skip tracing legal in the UK?

Yes, where there is a lawful reason such as money owed, legal proceedings, probate, a former tenancy or a commercial dispute. UK data protection law requires a lawful basis for every search, and a reputable service records it and refuses instructions without one.

### Do American skip tracing websites work for UK addresses?

Rarely. They are built on US public records that have no UK equivalent, so their British results are usually old listings. A result labelled current is often years out of date.

### How much does skip tracing cost in the UK?

Trace Bureau charges £100 for a Standard trace in 3 to 5 working days, £150 for Express within 48 hours and £195 for Priority within 24 hours. Nothing is paid when you instruct and there is no fee if the person is not found.

### Can a landlord use skip tracing to find a former tenant in the UK?

Yes. Recovering rent arrears or the cost of damage from a former tenant is a lawful reason. The landlord needs the tenant's full legal name plus a date of birth or a previous address, which is usually the rented property itself.
