Tracing agent vs private investigator vs people-search site: which one actually finds a current UK address?
Type "find someone's address" into a search engine and three kinds of business appear: people-search sites offering instant results, private investigators offering discretion and experience, and tracing agents offering a fixed fee. They are not three versions of the same thing. People-search sites: cheap, instant, usually wrong
A people-search site is a database with a search box. The UK ones recycle a small number of old public listings that many people opted out of years ago; the American ones barely cover the UK at all. You pay a few pounds or a subscription and get a list of names with addresses, some labelled "current", most of them the address the person had when the list was compiled. Nobody checks the result and nobody is accountable for it. For the person who wants to send a birthday card to an old friend who has never moved, it can work. A good private investigator will find almost anyone in the UK. The skill is real: knowing what a current record looks like, how to cross-reference, when a result is solid and when it is a lead dressed up as an answer. Some of what you are paying for is the office, the meeting and the sales process rather than the trace. A tracing agent: built for volume
Tracing agents grew up serving firms that need addresses by the hundred. Fixed fee, fast turnaround, often "no find, no fee", which in practice usually means you pay first and are refunded if the trace fails. Quality varies enormously. Some are a person cross-referencing records; some are a single database lookup with a logo on the report.
